The new feminist t-shirt trend has led to some serious questions about the future of feminism and it’s latest form. Feminism is trending. And that’s what’s concerning us. Trends come and go, it’s what they’re known for. What was new last week, isn’t new this week. When we first saw this trend, we were pleased and empowered. But what happens when the trend ends? Will feminism be old news? Will we forget about it again until some fashion mogul decides it’s back in? 

In an unsteady time across the world, where do you look but to each other? We’re busy women, so when the t-shirt trend came around it wasn’t just popular because we’re suckers for anything online, but because it was the one way we could all touch out to each other. It was each one of us putting our lighters up into the sky, showing that we were here. But because we turned it into a trend, what did that mean to the future of feminism? 

Women have come a long way. Hard times may be over but there are more on the horizon. The fight for equality is an active one. We battle for it daily. From wolf-whistles on our way to the office to political leaders pushing us five steps back. For some, their equal rights plea is only beginning, from girls just being born, who will not know it’s their right to go to school, to grown women who are forced into the shadow of a man. A t-shirt, no, won’t make things better. But what it does do is shows us that someone else is there. We’re all here, all women, all individuals struggling. 

So what is the future?

The future for feminism is only a bright one. We’ve thought so hard to be valued we won’t tarnish our images. We wouldn’t have dived into the t-shirt trend if we weren’t trying to send a message. It was a powerful, silent message that connected a community of women together, forever. We are the movement, and we showed that we won’t be swayed. Feminism is not a trend. Our rights don’t come in and out of fashion. You’ll know that it’s something inside, something you carry with you everywhere.

For a brief moment in time women everywhere were connected by just a slogan on their tee. It may have been a fashion statement, but it was much more than that – we were united, fighting for a cause and taking advantage of the publicity of the trend. Taking advantage of Social Media and trends, we’ve made feminism accessible to women everywhere. We’ve made it fashionable.
